Monero Now ’Exclusively’ Accepted as Payment Method by Fortnite Merchandise Store

Monero (XMR) is now being “exclusively” accepted by Retail Row, the merchandise store for the online video game Fortnite as a cryptocurrency payment option, as tweeted by Monero Jan. 1.

The online video game, Fortnite was developed by Epic Games and was released in July 2017. According to the report, Fortnite has over 125 million players worldwide. Epic Games was worth over $15 billion in its latest funding round in October 2018.

Crypto payments service, GloBee receives support from Retail Row. GloBee is known for enabling retailers to accept cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC) and Ripple (XRP), whereas the only digital currency supported by the store is XMR. Various conventional methods including credit cards and PayPal can also be used to make payments by the customers.

An earlier report in October reveals that Malwarebytes, a cybersecurity company discovered that fraudsters were using malware to aim at the Bitcoin (BTC) wallet addresses of Fortnite gamers. Malicious data theft code was purposely being sneaked by “Con artists” into downloads that clearly promised “free” season six Fortnite Android versions, together with other “bogus cheats, wallhacks and aimbots.”

According to an investigation, malicious packages of code were concealed by Free V-Bucks (an in-game currency). The investigation by Malwarebytes reveals that deceptive links were advertised through scammers’ YouTube channels, which take users to make downloads that conceal the malware.

Palo Alto Networks, a network and enterprise security company discovered in June that cryptojacking was used to maliciously mine about 5 percent of all XMR in circulation. A report shows that Monero had an “incredible monopoly” on the cryptocurrencies which was aimed by malware, with a total of $175 million that was mined maliciously.

The report also shows that the information does not consist of web-based Monero miners or other miners they couldn’t have access to, indicating that the 5 percent is possibly too low of a calculation.

According to data from CoinMarketCap, XMR has increased 3.27 percent on the day and is currently changing hands at $47.46 as at the time of press.
